Engineering of Living Materials
ALIVE is a collaborative initiative involving 21 laboratories of the ETH Zurich. The initiative explores the engineering of living organisms and their application for innovative materials and technologies. Their approach encompasses the study of natural systems and the development of bio-hybrid or bio-mimetic synthetic systems bridging across scales, from the nano to the macro and structural scale. The project partners focus on three different streams:
  • An Actuated Human Joint Organoid on Chip
  • Multiscale Biohybrid Tissues for Robotics Driven by Applications in Health
  • Living Systems for Carbon Capturing in Self-Aware Infrastructure

The initiative brings together scientists from material science, engineering, biosystems science and possible impact areas such as architecture and health. Together they aim at advancing current manufacturing practices by pushing a shift from passive inanimate objects and environments towards self-aware living materials and technologies.
Please visit the ALIVE website for more information.
The SFA-AM supports the ALIVE initiative by providing matching funds for 18 doctoral students at ETH Zurich. In addition, the following technologies and infrastructure were funded by the SFA-AM:
NanoOne1000 Bioprinter
Multiphoton Lithography
