Engineering of Living Materials
ALIVE is a collaborative initiative involving 21 laboratories of the ETH Zurich. The initiative explores the engineering of living organisms and their application for innovative materials and technologies. Their approach encompasses the study of natural systems and the development of bio-hybrid or bio-mimetic synthetic systems bridging across scales, from the nano to the macro and structural scale. The project partners focus on three different streams:
The initiative brings together scientists from material science, engineering, biosystems science and possible impact areas such as architecture and health. Together they aim at advancing current manufacturing practices by pushing a shift from passive inanimate objects and environments towards self-aware living materials and technologies.
